Vikings fall at 24th ranked North Central

and scored nine points with two assists.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Central, ranked 24th in the latest NCAA Division III national ranking, defeated Augustana 105-82 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action on Wednesday, February 4 in Naperville, Illinois. The Cardinals forced 26 Viking turnovers and pulled down 27 offensive rebounds in the game.
 
With 4:30 left in the first half Augustana pulled to within a single point (36-35) on a layup by sophomore Katie Villa (Janesville Craig HS, Janesville, Wis.). The Vikings would score just two more points in the half, two free throws from senior Valerie VanRoeyen (Libertyville HS, Grayslake, Ill.) at 1:02, and go into intermission down 50-37 as North Central closed out the first stanza on a 14-2 run.
 
The Cardinals scored the first five points of the second half to forge ahead by 18 (55-37) at the 16:58 mark Augustana never got within single digits from that point forward. The Vikings cut it to 10 (60-50) at 13:32 on a three point field goal from VanRoeyen but North Central went on a 25-9 run over the next four minutes and with 9:36 left the lead was 26 (85-59).
 
Tess Godhardt was a handful for Augustana to defend as she scored 27 points on nine of 15 from the floor and nine of 11 from the free throw line. She also grabbed eight rebounds and had three steals. A total of six North Central players were in double figures as Maryssa Cladis and Corrine Rowe had 12 each, Bobbi Johns scored 11 and Paula Zerante and Jamie Cuny scored 10 apiece. Cuny also pulled down 13 rebounds.
 
The Vikings got 27 points from Marissa Pezzopane (Addison Trail HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) and 21 from VanRoeyen to lead the offense. Senior Meagan Murphy (Marian Central Catholic HS, Johnsburg, Ill.) scored nine points but grabbed a game high 14 rebounds.
 
Neither team shot very well as North Central made 33 of 92 shots (.359) and Augustana hit on 30 of 83 (.361). The Vikings put the Cardinals on the free throw line 40 times, where they made 29, and also committed 26 turnovers.
 
Augustana is now 7-14 on the season and 1-9 in the CCIW while North Central is 19-2 and 8-2. The Vikings will host Carthage at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7.
