Vikings beat Millikin 63-55 on Senior Night for second straight victory in CCIW

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana used a stifling defense in the first half to grab momentum in the game and maintained its composure down the stretch to defeat Millikin 63-55 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women's basketball action on Saturday, February 14 in the Carver Center. The Vikings bolted to a 27-20 halftime lead and then held the Big Blue to just 10 points in the final 10 minutes of the second half to win for the second consecutive game.
 
In the first half, when head coach Mark Beinborn's charges forged a 27-20 lead, Augustana held Millikin to just .206 (7-34) from the field.
 
At the beginning of the second half Millikin came out on an 11-3 run and took a 31-30 lead with 16:41 to play on a basket by Kelsey Going. Augustana freshman Victoria Allen (Eureka HS, Wildwood, Mo.) nailed a three point basket but :13 later to put her team ahead 33-31.
 
From there the Vikings would never relinquish the lead.  A 9-2 run from the 10:00 mark to 5:22 helped them go from one point ahead (46-45) to leading by eight (55-47) after junior Marissa Pezzopane (Addison Trail HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) made a basket.
 
Pezzopane led all scorers in the game with 15 points and she also grabbed eight rebounds. She was joined in double figures by sophomore Jennifer VanWatermeulen (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) with 11. Allen added nine points.
 
The Vikings won the rebounding battle by a margin of 45-41 with junior Andrea McNally (Hinsdale South HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) hauling in a game-high 11.
 
Millikin had two players; Kelsey Going and Holly Haskins, with 10 points each.
 
It was "Senior Night" in the Carver Center and Valerie VanRoeyen (Libertyville HS, Grayslake, Ill.) and Meagan Murphy (Marian Central Catholic HS, Johnsburg, Ill.) played their last game at home for their careers. VanRoeyen scored six points with three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Murphy contributed five points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.
 
The Vikings moved to 9-15 overall and 3-10 in the CCIW while Millikin fell to 13-11 and 4-9.
 
Augustana will close out the 2014-15 season on Saturday, February 21 with a game at Wheaton.
