ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana used wins in the first two weight classes and four of the last five to secure a hard fought 19-15 victory over Loras on Wednesday, December 9 in the Carver Center. The Vikings moved to 3-2 on the season while the Duhawks fell to 0-4.
 
Head coach Eric Juergens' team jumped off to a 7-0 lead after the first two weight classes. Senior Jimmy Panozzo (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) got the Vikings off to a quick start with a 15-5 win over Dayton Olson at 125 pounds and sophomore Brendan Gould (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) picked up a narrow 2-1 win over Michael Triplett at 133.
 
Loras won the next three matches to forge a 12-7 advantage heading into 165 pounds. The Duhawks got a pin at 5:29 of the 141 pound class when Evan Weaver stopped junior Sean McMahon (Andrew HS, Tinley Park, Ill.). Loras picked up one point decisions at 149 and 157 respectively. Colin Griffin beat sophomore Collin Tomkins (Grandville HS, Grandville, Mich.) 3-2 at 149 and Jimmy Davis defeated senior David Tessiatore (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) 4-3 at 157.
 
In a pivotal match at 165, Augustana sophomore Trace Timmons (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) decisioned Sam Schuler 5-4 to cut the Loras lead to 12-10. Senior Alex Bowers (Noblesville HS, Noblesville, Ind.) put the Vikings on top for good with a convincing 10-3 win over Chris Malone at 174 pounds.
 
Senior Thomas Reyhons (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) survived a rugged bout with Awais Arain at 184, coming away with a 4-3 victory to push the Augustana lead to 16-12.
 
The match tightened after 197 pounds when the Duhawks Malcom Watson beat junior Chris Giatras (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) 2-1.
 
That made it 16-15 in favor of Augustana heading into 285 pounds. Senior John Seaman (Munster HS, Munster, Ind.) sealed the team win for the Vikings with an 8-4 victory over Quin Gilliam.
 
Augustana will be in action again on Saturday, December 12 at the North Central Invitational in Naperville, Illinois.
