CARLINVILLE, Ill. – There was nothing flashy about Augustana's season opening win over Blackburn by a score 72-35 on Friday, November 13 in Carlinville, Illinois. Head coach Mark Beinborn's crew trailed just once in the game en route to a 37 point victory.
 
Three players finished the game in double digits in the scoring department with senior Andrea McNally (Hinsdale South HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) leading the way with 13 points. Fellow senior Marissa Pezzopane (Addison Trail HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) chipped in with 12 and freshman Corrie Reiley (Prophetstown HS, Prophetstown, Ill.) tallied 11 in her collegiate debut.
 
The Vikings were behind 6-5 with just over three minutes left in the first quarter after the Beavers' Danae Smith made a layup. Freshman Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) scored with 4:23 left and that sparked a 13-2 run to the end of the period. Junior Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) hit one of two free throws with just one second left on the clock to make it 18-8 at the buzzer.
 
Augustana scored 11 of the first 13 points in the second quarter to go up by 19 (29-10) with 3:43 remaining and at halftime the margin was 34-14.
 
Kallenberger led all rebounders with nine as the Vikings finished with a 42-41 advantage on the boards. She also had five steals, a blocked shot and an assist.
 
Junior Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) had nine points with four assists and two steals and for good measure she added five rebounds. Junior Jen VanWatermeulen (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) scored eight points with a team high five assists, a steal and a rebound.
 
The Vikings were superb on defense, limiting Blackburn to just .278 (15-54) from the floor and forcing 33 turnovers. Aleisha Stiltner and Danae Smith led the Beavers in scoring with eight points each.
 
Augustana will be in action again on November 17 at Rockford.
