Vikings go 2-0 on first day of Pumpkin Bash

Pumpkin Bash.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Coach Kelly Bethke's Augustana volleyball team bumped its 2015 record to 15-14 overall and 3-4 in the CCIW with a pair of four-set wins over North Park and Central Friday on day one of the Pumpkin Bash at Carver Center. The Vikings wrap up the tournament and the season on Saturday, taking on Westminster at noon and Concordia-Chicago at 2:00 p.m.
 
AUGUSTANA 3, NORTH PARK 1 (25-18; 25-22; 22-25; 25-17)
 
Augustana evened its season record at 14-14 with a victory in its final CCIW match of the year. After winning the first two sets 25-18 and 25-22, the Vikings shook off a 25-22 stumble in set three to take the fourth 25-17. Augustana wrapped up CCIW play with a 3-4 mark. North Park fell to 10-16 overall this season and 0-6 in the league.
 
Junior Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) pounded out 15 kills and a .519 hitting percentage , while classmate Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) added 11 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Senior setter Jordan Hampel (Hilliard-Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) had 25 assists and six service aces. Junior setter Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) chipped in with 23 assists.
 
Morrissey and Kibir-Evans made their presence felt defensively as well. Each was in on four blocks. Senior Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) and junior Amy Kalkhoff (Clear Creek Amana HS, North Liberty, Iowa) led the way in digs, with 11 and 10, respectively.
 
AUGUSTANA 3, CENTRAL 1 (25-17; 16-25; 25-17; 25-17)
 
In the match between the Vikings and the Dutch, the teams split the first two sets with each winning by a fairly comfortable margin. Augustana looked to be in trouble in the third, trailing 13-7, but fired off the next 11 points, the last 10 with Lindaman serving. From there, the Vikings closed out a 25-17 win. The fourth set followed much the same script, with Central taking an early 9-3 lead. The hosts worked their way back into it, overtaking the Dutch at 13-12 and pulling away for their third 25-17 win of the match.
 
Morrissey again led the attack with a dozen kills, giving her 27 on the day with just one hitting error. Senior Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) was in double figures as well, with 11 kills. Lindaman had team highs of 21 assists and two service aces. Hampel added 19 assists.
 
Murray contributed on defense as well, digging a team-high 21 balls, while Siebert added 18. Morrissey, Kibir-Evans and sophomore Maissie Musick (Camp Point Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) were in on four blocks each.
