Sophomore Maissie Musick had seven kills and three blocks in Augustana's five-set victory over
Central Saturday in La Crosse, Wisconsin.LA CROSSE, Wis. – Augustana's trip to Wisconsin-La Crosse yielded just what Coach
Kelly Bethke's Vikings were looking for, as the team finished off a 3-0 weekend Saturday with wins over Central and the host Eagles. Bethke's bunch took their opening match by claiming a 15-13 final set win over the Dutch and then capped the day by avenging a straight-set loss to UW-La Crosse earlier this year with a four-set victory. Augustana is now 11-12 on the season heading into a CCIW match at Wheaton on Wednesday, October 21.
AUGUSTANA 3, CENTRAL 2 (25-19,23-25,23-25,25-18,15-13) The Vikings finished strong in their win over the Dutch. Trailing 2-1, they took the fourth set by a convincing 25-18 margin and closed out the match with a 15-13 final-set win.
Augustana was balanced on the attack, with five players logging at least five kills. Senior
Sydney Sand (Burlington Central HS, Elgin, Ill.), junior
Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) and sophomore
Maissie Musick (Camp Point Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) led the way with seven each. Sand's came on a .429 hitting percentage, while Musick's was .312. Juniors
Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) and
Amy Kalkhoff (Clear Creek Amana HS, North Liberty, Ill.) added six and five kills, respectively.
Junior
Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Ill.) had team highs of 16 assists and 13 digs. Senior
Jordan Hampel (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) contributed 14 assists and, along with sophomore
Claire Martin (Mother McAuley HS, Orland Park, Ill.), delivered a pair of service aces. Senior
Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) added a dozen digs.
Morrissey, Musick, Sand and Kibir-Evans were all in on a team-high three blocks.
AUGUSTANA 3, UW-LA CROSSE 1 (21-25, 25-21,25-17,25-18) After dropping the opening set 25-21, the Vikings roared back to win three straight games against the hosts.
Despite trailing 4-1 in the second, Augustana rebounded, taking the lead for good with a five-point run to go from a 12-all tie to up 17-12. It was Hampel serving on the final four of those points. In the third, the Vikings controlled from the start, taking the first five points on the way to a 25-17 win. A block by Morrissey and Kibir-Evans provided set point. Not letting the hosts back in the match, Augustana wrapped things up with a convincing 25-18 fourth-set win.
Morrissey's 13 kills and .500 attack percentage led the way against the Eagles, but she had plenty of support from Sand and senior
Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.), with 11 kills each. Freshman
Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) added nine on a .400 hitting percentage.
Lindaman and Hampel offered up 25 and 17 assists, respectively, with Lindaman dealing a pair of aces as well.
Siebert and Kibir-Evans led the way defensively. Augustana's career record-holder added 17 digs to her total and Kibir-Evans recorded three solo blocks and assisted on three more.
