The Big Blue overcame an eight point deficit in the final 8:36 and held the Vikings scoreless in the final 1:50 to pick up the win.
Augustana fell behind early and trailed by 14 points on three occasions in the first half with the latest coming at the 10:03 mark (29-15) after a three point field goal by Millikin's Yip Ypya. The Vikings closed out the half on a 25-5 run and took a six point lead into the locker room at intermission. Sophomore
Jennifer VanWatermeulen (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) nailed a three point field goal with just four seconds left to give Augustana a 40-34 lead at the break.
In the second half the Vikings were in front 70-62 with 8:36 to play after senior
Valerie VanRoeyen (Libertyville HS, Grayslake, Ill.) hit a three point field goal. Millikin tied the contest at 72-72 with 3:21 to play on a single free throw by Alyssa Saklak.
Junior
Marissa Pezzopane (Addison Trail HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) put Augustana back on top 74-72 with a pair of free throws at 3:06 but Millikin's Kelsey Going tied things at 74-74 with 2:56 left. Freshman
Victoria Allen (Eureka HS, Wildwood, Mo.) gave the Vikings their last lead of the night with a single free throw at 1:50 to make it 75-74.
Millikin closed the game by scoring the final six points to take the 80-75 victory.
Six Vikings finished in double digits in scoring as sophomore point guard
Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) led the way with 18 points. She also had seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. VanRoeyen scored 13 points and sophomore
Katie Villa (Craig HS, Janesville, Wis.) dropped in 11. Allen, Pezzopane and junior
Andrea McNally (Hinsdale South HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) all had 10 points.
Augustana led the rebounding battle with a slim 34-33 margin but McNally hauled in 11 to lead the way. Villa contributed six in just 16 minutes of action.
Millikin was led in scoring by Ypya with 18 points.
Augustana, now 7-11 overall and 1-6 in the CCIW, will host Elmhurst on Wednesday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m. Millikin is now 13-5 and 4-3.
