Senior John Seaman is shown putting the finishing touches on his pin in the 285 pound
weight class that clinched Augustana's 19-18 win over ninth ranked Coe on Thursday,
January 15 in the Carver Center.ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior Jack Seaman
(Munster HS, Munster, Ind.) recorded a pin with just :34 left in the 285 pound weight class to give Augustana a 19-18 victory over ninth ranked Coe in non-conference wrestling action on Thursday, January 15 in the Carver Center. The match actually ended in an 18-18 tie but the Vikings were awarded one point based on the third criteria of breaking the tie-breaker. That criteria was most falls, with Seaman's pin being the only one of the evening.
Each team won five matches but it was Seaman's decking of Creighton Fox in the latter stages of the third period that proved to be the difference. After a scoreless first period, Seaman recorded an escape early in the second to make it 1-0. In the third period Fox had the choice and chose neutral and Seaman picked a takedown halfway through the stanza. He finally got Fox turned and was awarded the pin with just :34 to go. At the time Augustana was trailing 18-12 to the Kohawks.
The Vikings won the first two weight classes with junior
Jimmy Panozzo (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) beat Jan Rosenberg 3-2 at 125 and freshman
Brendan Gould (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) defeating Mike Gussarson 5-0 at 133.
Coe picked up wins at 141 and 149 to tie the match at 6-6. At 141 Luke Kremer defeated freshman
Collin Tomkins (Grandville HS, Grandville, Mich.) 9-6 and then sophomore
Matt Sears (Marist HS, New Lenox, Ill.) dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Josh Donkle at 149.
Senior
Hector Ruiz (Aurora East HS, Aurora, Ill.) beat Brody Beck 10-4 at 157 to put Augustana on top 9-6. Coe's top ranked 165 pounder, Farai Sewera won by technical fall over Viking sophomore
Jordan Furiosi (Valley Christian HS, San Jose, Calif.) at 165 pounds. The match was 16-0 when it ended at 4:56 but Furiosi's ability to keep from being pinned would prove crucial later on. Coe received five points for the technical fall but was unable to gain the six points it would have received had Sewera been able to pin Furiosi.
Coe's Ryan Harrington defeated senior
Jordan Richardson (Wyoming HS, Grandville, Mich.) 8-2 at 174 to make it 14-9. Viking senior
Thomas Reyhons (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) closed the gap to 14-12 with an 8-4 win over Ryan Sheldon at 184. In the 197 pound bout Donnie Horner of Coe picked up a 17-8 win over sophomore
Ethan Benoit (Marist HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) to make it 18-12 in favor of the visitors.
That set up Seaman's heroics at 285 pounds.
Augustana evened its record at 5-5 on the season while Coe dropped to 7-7. The Vikings will compete at the Matmen Invitational on Saturday, January 17 in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
