A furious comeback fell just short for the Augustana women's tennis team as the Vikings fell to Carthage 5-4 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action on Saturday, September 6 at the Lower Campus Courts. Head coach Jon Miedema's bunch fell behind the Lady Reds 3-0 after dropping all three doubles matches.

The Vikings closed the gap with victories in four the six singles matches but losses at numbers five and six proved to be the difference in the match. Augustana drops to 3-1 overall on the season and 1-1 in the CCIW while Carthage moves to 3-0 and 1-1.

Things did not get off to a good start for the home team as the Vikings lost at all three doubles spots. At number one the team of sophomores Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) dropped an 8-6 decision to Haleigh McPeek and Maxine Mella. That was the same score that the number two team of sophomore Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and freshman Mollie Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.) lost by to Abbi Howell and Eliza Barter.

The Vikings' number three team of seniors Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) and Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) dropped an 8-4 decision to Taylor Bolyard and Kristen Kalinka.

When it got to singles, Augustana put some wins together. Lauren Goggin beat McPeek 2-6; 6-1; 6-3 at number one and Dana Goggin won 6-3; 4-6; 6-3 over Maxine Mella at number two. Magee beat Howell 6-1; 6-2 at number three and Pence defeated Barter 6-4; 6-0 at number four.

Andonova dropped a heart-breaking three set match at number five to Bolyard 3-6; 7-6; 7-5 and freshman Alyssa Reuter (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) fell to Kristen Peterson 6-4; 6-2 at number six.
