Augustana goes 1-1 on second day of Gargoyle Classic

Sophomore Nicole Morrissey had 17 kills Saturday as Augustana split a pair of four-set matches at
the University of Chicago's Gargoyle Classic. The Vikings defeated Kalamazoo, but fell to Cornell.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The second day of the Gargoyle Classic at the University of Chicago yielded similar results to the first for Coach Kelly Bethke's Augustana volleyball team. The Vikings split a pair of matches Saturday, defeating Kalamazoo in four sets before falling to Cornell in four. On Friday, Augustana beat Concordia-Chicago and lost to the hosts. Bethke's squad is now 13-3 on the season heading into a big CCIW match at 11th-ranked Elmhurst on Tuesday, September 30.
 
Augustana 3, Kalamazoo 0 (25-12; 25-14; 21-25; 25-15)
 
Despite dropping the third set by a 25-21 score, the Vikings dominated the Hornets in winning the other three. An Emily Leazer (St. Viator HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) kill finished off a 25-12 Augustana win in the first and Amy Kalkoff's (Clear Creek Amana HS, North Liberty, Iowa) kill ended the second, with the Vikings winning 25-14.
 
Set three was nip-and tuck throughout, but Kalamazoo scored the final four points for a 25-21 win. Augustana wrapped things up with a 25-15 fourth-set win. The Vikings never trailed and were last tied at 4-4. A Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) kill ended the match.
 
Augustana showed excellent balance, with five players recording at least five kills each. Leazer and Morrissey led the way with seven apiece. Junior Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) recorded match highs of five service aces and 16 digs. Sophomore Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) had 19 assists, while junior Jordan Hampel (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) added a dozen.
 
The Hornets dropped to 6-10 on the season.
 
Cornell 3, Augustana 1 (25-21; 24-26; 25-21; 26-24)
 
Cornell avenged a three-set loss to Augustana at the Viking Classic on August 30, winning in four tightly-contested games. The teams were even at a set apiece after a 25-21 Ram win and a 26-24 Augustana victory. Cornell took the third, 25-21 again, and won the match with a 26-24 win in set four.
 
Leazer finished with 12 more kills. Morrissey added 10 and junior Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) finished with nine. Hampel had 21 assists and Lindaman 14. Siebert (17), Hampel (15) and Leazer (13) all reached double figures in digs. Sophomore Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) was in on five blocks to give her nine for the day.
 
The Rams, who fell from the AVCA Top 25 this week, improved to 9-5 on the year.
