for a victory at number three doubles as Augustana kicked
off the 2014-15 season with a 7-2 win at Grinnell.GRINNELL, Iowa – Taking advantage of tremendous depth, the Augustana women's tennis team opened the 2014-15 school year on a positive note with a 7-2 non-conference victory at Grinnell on Thursday, August 28 in Grinnell, Iowa. Head coach
Jon Miedema's team was the first Augustana squad to taste competition in the new year and the Vikings were impressive.
Coming off an 18-7 record in 2012-13, the Vikings jumped on the Pioneers early with wins in two of the three doubles matches and then won five of six singles. Last year Augustana beat Grinnell 8-1 in the fall before losing 7-2 to the Pioneers in the spring.
In the season opener, the sophomore duo of
Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and
Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) led from the top. The Goggin twins defeated Shirlene Luk and Virginia Purcell at number one doubles by a score of 8-2. In singles play,
Lauren Goggin won a hard fought 6-1; 2-6; 10-8 battle over Luk at number one while
Dana Goggin handled Purcell 6-2; 6-3 at number two.
The number three doubles team of senior
Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) and sophomore
Amy Even (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) swept past Anushka Joshi and Julia Rumley 8-0. The win by Pence and Even gave Augustana a 2-1 lead heading into singles after the number two team of freshman
Mollie Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.) and sophomore
Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) lost a tough 8-6 decision to Hannah Cook and Shanaz Daneshdoost.
Magee picked up her first collegiate victory when she moved to singles with a 6-2; 5-7; 10-5 win over Cook at number three. Andonova beat Joshi 6-2; 6-3 at number five and freshman
Alyssa Reuter (Normal University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) took a three-setter from Briannah Wilson 6-1; 2-6; 10-8.
Augustana, now 1-0, will travel to Whitewater, Wisconsin for the Warhawk Invitational on Saturday, August 30 before coming home on Monday, September 1 with dual matches against North Central (9:00 a.m.) and Loras (3:00 p.m.) at the newly refurbished Lower Campus Courts.
