Voland, Eisenberg and Devore named to Academic All-American team in men's track & field

Three Augustana men's track & field athletes were named to the Capital One Academic All-American team, it was announced today. Senior Josh Eisenberg (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) and junior David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) were named to the first team while junior David Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.) was a second team selection.
 
The Capital Once Academic All-America program is sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America and the selection of Eisenberg, Voland and Devore brings Augustana's all-time total of Academic All-Americans to 152. Voland and Eisenberg are making their second straight appearance on the elite squad while Devore is a first time honoree.
 
Eisenberg finished his career with a 16th place finish at the NCAA Division III national meet in the decathlon. He earned Academic All-American honors last spring and was named the winner of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship this past winter. He won the heptathlon in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin during the 2014 indoor championship and broke the league record for points in the process.
 
He is a six-time all-conference performer and was 12th in the NCAA Division III national indoor meet in the heptathlon this past winter. He broke the Augustana school record in the heptathlon four different times in his career. He was the winner of the Jack Swartz Award in the CCIW following the indoor season of 2014. He was also the winner of the Knut Erickson Award given to the Augustana senior letter-blanket award winner with the highest cumulative grade point average.
 
Eisenberg did extensive research as an undergraduate, working in cancer research at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas during the summer of 2013. Her also spent the past school year doing retinal development research on the campus of Augustana and also served as a chemistry tutor his last three years. He was involved in Athletes Giving Back and was a member of the Beta Beta Beta biological honor society.
 
Eisenberg recently graduated from Augustana with a 3.96 grade point average while majoring in biology and pre-medicine.
 
Voland, like Eisenberg, was an Academic All-American a year ago. He recently placed second in the NCAA Division III national championship in the 400 hurdles with a school record time of :50.88. He also anchored the Vikings' 1600 relay team to a second place finish with a time of 3:09.81.
 
He is an eight-time All-American, five times as a member of the 1600 relay and three times in the 400 hurdles. He has won nine CCIW conference titles, including three straight in the 400 hurdles. He set the CCIW record in winning the event this year. He is also a school record holder in both the 800 and 1600 relays both indoors and outdoors. Three times he was named the CCIW "Athlete of the Week".
 
Voland has been involved in the Augustana Emerge Leadership Program and served as a peer leader for two years. He was the co-chair for Awareness Week and volunteered for the St. Baldrick's Day fundraiser, World Relief in Moline, Illinois, the River Bend Foodbank and the Quad City Botanical Center.
 
He is a math and secondary education major with a 3.81 grade point average.
 
Devore won "Most Outstanding Athlete" honors in the CCIW championships both indoors and outdoors this past year. During the indoor championships he won the 60, 200 and 1600 relay and the 100, 200 and 400 relay outdoors. He ran on the Vikings second place 1600 relay at the NCAA Division III  outdoor national meet and led off the fourth place 400 relay. He owns school record in the 400 and 800 relays outdoor and the 1600 relay indoors. He was undefeated in the 100 and 200 this past outdoor season. Twice he was named the CCIW's "Athlete of the Week" and he holds the school record in the 200 indoors. He is a five-time All-American.
 
Devore is an active member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is the co-chair of the Longfellow Middle School program. He is a peer mentor and has been active in the office of student activities where he was the co-chair of two separate committees.
 
A math and computer science major, Devore has a 3.58 grade point average.
 
Augustana has a rich tradition in producing Academic All-Americans since the program began by CoSIDA in 1952. Currently the Vikings have 152 Academic All-Americans and ranks sixth – all divisions – in the nation. The Vikings are second in NCAA Division III, trailing only M.I.T. and lead both the CCIW and the state of Illinois in number produced.
 
Track and field has been an especially strong sport for Augustana as the Vikings lead the nation with 24 honorees. Eisenberg, Voland and Devore become the fourth, fifth and sixth Augustana athletes this school year to win Academic All-America honors. They join football players Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Eric Dratnol (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) and women's soccer standout Maggie Hoscheit (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.).
