Jon Miedema's Augustana men rode a sweep of doubles play Saturday to earn a third-place finish at the CCIW Tennis Championship with a 5-4 win over Carthage. The Vikings avenged a 5-4 April 12 loss to the Red Men to take third place at the conference tournament for the second year in a row.
Senior
Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, De Pere, Wis.) and junior
Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) won their first doubles match by a score of 8-6 over Pawel Jaworski and Chris Conley. Both of Miedema's other doubles teams scored 8-2 victories over their Red Men opponents. At number two, seniors
Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) and
Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) defeated Alex Boomgarden and Ryan Jump and Augustana sophomore
Austin Schoeck (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) teamed with freshman
Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) to best Tony Gonzalez and Alex Ferruzzi at number three.
Palmer, at number one and
Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.), at number six, picked up the Vikings' pivotal singles wins. Palmer defeated Boomgarden 6-1, 6-1 and Lenz picked up his team-high 20th singles win of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ferruzzi. Wall dropped a tough match to Jump 6-3, 6-7 (3), 10-7 at second singles. Bayles fell two and one to Jaworski at number three and Arnold 6-3, 7-5 to Conley at number four. Woolf dropped consecutive 6-4 sets to Gonzalez at fifth singles.
Augustana wraps up the 2013-14 season with a 17-11 dual meet record.
