ELMHURST, Ill. – In the final match of the 2014 regular season, Augustana dropped a 6-3 decision to league champion Elmhurst in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action on Saturday, April 26. The match, which was played at Brune Tennis Courts in Elmhurst, Illinois, marked the end of the regular season for the Vikings and head coach
Jon Miedema.
Augustana, which is now 15-10 overall and 3-3 in the CCIW, will host North Central in the first round of the conference tournament on Tuesday, April 29 at the Lower Campus Courts. The Vikings need a win to advance to the semi-final, which will be played on Friday, May 2 in Elmhurst. That match would be against the top-seeded Bluejays, who are currently 13-4 overall, 6-0 in the conference and ranked 15
th in the NCAA Division III's Central Regional.
On Saturday, the Vikings won two of the three doubles matches to head into singles with a 2-1 advantage. The senior duo of
Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) and
Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Homewood, Ill.) at number two picked up an 8-3 win over Luke Tanaka and Chris Harrison. Arnold and Bayles are now 18-9 on the season. The number three team of freshman
Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) and sophomore
Austin Schoeck (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) beat Vincent McPherson and Quinn Jennings 9-7. Woolf and Schoeck are now 14-5 this year.
Augustana nearly had a 3-0 lead coming out of doubles but the number one team of junior
Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) and senior
Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, DePere, Wis.) fell to Alex Harbert and Will Jung 8-6.
Bayles picked up the lone singles victory for the Vikings when he defeated McPherson 7-5; 3-6; 6-3 at number three.
