Men's tennis wins fourth straight with 7-2 victory over Illinois Wesleyan

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A 7-2 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's tennis victory over Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday, April 22 at the Lower Campus Courts lifted Augustana to 15-8 overall and 3-1 in league play. The Vikings have now won four matches in a row and seven of their last eight. It was also the 13th win over the Titans in the last 15 meetings between the two schools dating back to 2004.
 
Senior Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) and Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) and freshman Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) all had doubles and singles victories in the match. Bayles and Arnold combined for an 8-5 win over Aaron Guenther and Calen Crim at number two and in the process ran their record to 16-9 on the year. Bayles beat Guenther 6-2; 6-2 at number three singles and is now 15-11 this year while Arnold defeated Kevin Piotrowski 6-2; 6-3 at number four to move to 17-9 for the season.
 
Woolf teamed with sophomore Austin Schoeck (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) at number three doubles and picked up an 8-2 win over Genyl Rufino and Kyle Hyland. Woolf and Schoeck have a sparkling 13-4 record this year. Woolf defeated Crim 7-6; 6-1 at number five singles and is now 12-8.
 
The Vikings led 2-1 after the doubles victories by Arnold/Bayles and Woolf/Schoeck and then won five of the six singles matches to seal the win.
 
Junior Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) defeated George Alex 6-3; 6-4 at number one singles to move to 15-6 this year. Sophomore Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.) beat Rufino 6-1; 6-0 at number six and is now 18-4.
 
Augustana will close out the regular season this weekend with a pair of key CCIW battles. The Vikings will play at Wheaton on Friday, April 25 at 4:00 p.m. and then travel to Elmhurst on Saturday, April 26 for an 11:00 a.m. match.
