Vikings fall to Carthage; beat Millikin on Senior Day

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Coach Jon Miedema's men's tennis team split two CCIW duals Saturday at Augustana's Lower Campus Courts. The Vikings dropped a 5-4 decision to Carthage in the morning before defeating Millikin 9-0 in the afternoon. Miedema's squad is now 12-8 overall and 2-1 in CCIW play and hosts Illinois Wesleyan in another conference dual on Monday, April 14 at 4:00 p.m.
 
Saturday was also Senior Day for the Vikings, with the team honoring career wins record-holder Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) as well as Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.), Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, De Pere, Wis.) and Grant Wick (Windsor HS, Fort Collins, Colo.).
 
CARTHAGE 5, AUGUSTANA 4
 
Carthage took two of three from Augustana in doubles competition before the teams split the six singles matches as the Red Men defeated the Vikings 5-4 in the day's first dual.
 
At third doubles, freshman Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) and sophomore Austin Schoeck (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) defeated Tony O'Connell and Alex Ferruzzi 8-4. Junior Lawrence Palmer (El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) and Wall dropped an 8-4 decision at first doubles to Pawel Jaworski and Chris Conley and Bayles and Arnold fell 9-7 at number two to Alex Boomgarden and Ryan Jump.
 
Palmer won his first singles match 6-3, 6-4 over Boomgarden. Bayles was a 0-6, 7-5, 6-4 winner over Jaworski at number three and freshman Jonathon Elsey (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) defeated Ferruzzi one and three at sixth singles. At number two, Jump beat Wall 6-3, 6-4. Arnold fell by the same scores to Conley at number four and Woolf fell one and four to O'Connell at fifth singles.
 
AUGUSTANA 9, MILLIKIN 0
 
The Vikings overwhelmed an undermanned Millikin outfit 9-0 in the afternoon dual, including four matches in which the all-freshman Big Blue were forced to default.
 
In doubles play, Palmer and Wall were 8-2 winners over Taylor Nave and Emerick Fulton at number one and Bayles and Arnold won 8-0 over Chris Klomp and Grant Edwards at number two. Woolf and Schoeck were default winners at third doubles.
 
Wall moved up to number one in singles and defeated Nave one and one. Bayles was leading 6-1, 3-0 at number two when Fulton defaulted due to injury. At third singles, Arnold added to his school record for wins, getting his 143rd career victory when Klomp was forced to default after set one, which Arnold had taken 6-1. Sophomore Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.) won a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Edwards at number four and Schoeck beat Jacob Keuker one and love at number five. Elsey was a winner by default at sixth singles.
