ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A 6-1 dual-meet record, eight school records and a second straight fourth-place finish at the CCIW Championship highlighted the 2013-14 season for Coach Scott Johannsen's Augustana men's swimming and diving squad. Five different Vikings were responsible for the six individual school standards, with sophomore David Sommers (Westlake HS, Thousand Oaks, Calif.) taking down two individual marks. Sommers was also a member of both record-setting relay teams.

Johanssen's team fell a scant 10 points short of an undefeated dual meet season, falling 120-110 to Lake Forest on November 9. Augustana recorded wins over Loras (152-79), Morningside (146-76), Luther (128-95), Simpson (185-23), Monmouth (159-78) and Coe (184-47).

The Vikings were also champions at Illinois Wesleyan's Halloween Invitational, winning every event in besting three other squads on October 26. In addition, they were second at Grinnell's 14-team Pioneer Classic and seven-team Grinnell Invitational as well as the seven-team Illinois Wesleyan Invitational. Augustana was fourth of nine teams at the University of Chicago Invitational.

At the CCIW Championship, held February 13-15 at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the Vikings finished fourth for the second consecutive year. Summers, senior Justin Reppy (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.), junior Aaron Holt (Mount Vernon HS, Mount Vernon, Ill.), freshman Matthew Roche (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and junior Josh Wielenga (School of Environmental Studies, Apple Valley, Minn.) all earned All-CCIW honors with top-three finishes. Reppy was second in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Sommers was second in the 100 butterfly and Roche in the 100 breaststroke. Holt was third in the 100 backstroke, as was Wielenga in the three-meter diving competition.

All eight of the new school records were set at the CCIW Championship. Sommers set new standards in the 100 (:50.46) and 200 (1:51.97) butterflies. Reppy and Roche broke school records in the 500 freestyle (4:34.45) and 100 breaststroke (:57.87), respectively, and sophomore Adam Bernardi (Boylan Catholic HS, Belvidere, Ill.) did the same in the 400 individual medley (4:10.44). Sophomore Felipe Hernandez (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) tied Holt's 2012 mark (1:56.00) in the 200 backstroke. This year's Vikings also set new school marks in the 200 (1:35.11) and 400 (3:29.39) medley relays. The 200 team consisted of Holt, Roche, Sommers and Reppy; while Holt, freshman Ian Disteldorf (Brother Rice HS, Oak Forest, Ill.), Sommers and senior Daniel Hinck (Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.) comprised the 400 unit.

Ten individuals etched their names on one or more of the school's top-ten all-time performance lists. In addition to the school-record performances, Sommers is now second on Augustana's 500 freestyle list with a best of 4:44.13. Bernardi has now posted top-ten bests in four events. He's second on the 1650 freestyle list (16:46.49) and third on the 1000 freestyle (10:07.09) and 200 individual medley (1:59.43) lists. Roche sits third and eighth, respectively, on the 50 (:21.65) and 100 (:48.47) freestyle lists. Reppy is second in the 200 butterfly (1:57.92). Disteldorf is second in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.17) and Hernandez is eighth in the 100 backstroke (:54.97).

Senior Ryan Chaney (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and freshmen Bryce Dibadj (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.), Robert Chaney (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and Tim Durning (Oswego HS, Oswego) posted top-ten bests as well. Dibadj is fifth on the 100 breaststroke list (1:01.36). Robert (2:16.72) and Ryan (2:16.87) Chaney are fifth and sixth, respectively, on the 200 breaststroke list and Durning eighth in the 1000 freestyle (10:36.30).
