Despite solid first half women's basketball falls at ninth ranked Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – Augustana battled and stayed close with ninth ranked Carthage in the first half but the ninth-ranked Lady Reds pulled away in the second half for an 80-53 victory on Saturday, February 8 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Vikings led early (6-0) in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin contest and only trailed by five points (32-27) at halftime.
 
A basket by senior Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) on Augustana's first possession of the second half sliced the lead to three (32-29) and with 15:20 left the Vikings were still within five (43-38) following another Tambling basket.
 
From that point on, however, Carthage outscored Augustana 37-15 to win going away. The Vikings only scored 10 points in the final 11:23 of the game.
 
The Lady Reds had all five starters in double figures with Kasey Kleiner leading the way with 15 points. As a team Carthage shot .566 (30-53) from the floor, including a sizzling .643 (18-28) in the second half. The Lady Reds were good on nine of 19 from three point range and outrebounded the Vikings 38-26.
 
Augustana got 12 points from senior Molly Etheridge (Normal Community HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and 11 from freshman Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.). Senior Amy Hicks (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) led the Vikings in rebounding with seven.
 
Augustana fell to 5-17 overall and 1-10 in the CCIW while Carthage is 19-2 and 10-0. The Vikings next game will be Wednesday, February 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Carver Center against Millikin.
