ELMHURST, Ill. – A quick start didn't hold up for Augustana on Thursday, February 6 as the 26
th ranked Vikings fell to defending College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin champ Elmhurst 29-17 at the Bluejays' Faganel Hall. With the loss, Augustana drops to 10-5 in dual meets and will face the University of Chicago on Saturday, February 8 at home. The first match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. and it will be "Senior Day" for
Hunter Feraco (Gull Lake HS, Battle Creek, Mich.) and
Abe Duran (East Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.).
Head coach
Eric Juergens' team got off to a quick start against the Bluejays, winning the first three weight classes and scoring bonus points in each for a 14-0 lead.
Sophomore
Jimmy Panozzo (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) won an 11-3 major decision over Eric English at 125 pounds to run his record to 20-10 on the year. Freshman
Sean McMahon (Andrew HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) followed with a pin at 3:55 of his 133 match against Miguel Venecia. That allowed McMahon to push his mark over .500 at 14-13.
Sophomore
Isaiah Schaub (St. Francis HS, Traverse City, Mich.) picked up a 10-2 major decision over Matt Quigley at 141 and he is now leading the team in victories with a 33-9 record.
Elmhurst won the next three weight classes, including a pin at 165 and heading into the 174 pound match Augustana led 14-13. Senior
Jordan Richardson (Grandville HS, Wyoming, Mich.) beat Mitch Morris 8-4 at 174 to make the score 17-13 in favor of the Vikings. Richardson is now 18-11 this season.
That would be the last win for Augustana, however as the Bluejays scored pins at 184 and 285 sandwiched around a major decision at 197.
