Men's tennis wins first two matches in Puerto Rico

PALMAS DEL MAR, HUMACAO, PUERTO RICO – The Augustana men's tennis team got off to a successful start in Puerto Rico as part of its spring break trip. Head coach Jon Miedema's Vikings pulled off two victories on Thursday, February 27 to run its 2014 record to 6-3.
 
Augustana defeated Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 7-2 in the first match of the day and then came back with a 6-3 win over Capital University in the night cap.
 
AUGUSTANA 7, PUERTO RICO-MAYAGUEZ 2
 
The Vikings used a strong showing in doubles to catapult to a 7-2 win over Puerto Rico-Mayguez on Thursday, February 27 in the first match of Augustana's spring break trip to Puerto Rico. After taking a 3-0 lead following doubles, the Vikings won four of the six singles matches.
 
The number one doubles team of junior Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) and senior Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, De Pere, Wis.) picked up an 8-5 win over Carlos Bruba and Humberto Vergara. Seniors Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) and Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) defeated Kevin Ramos and Carlos Atrenza 8-6 at number two and the number three team of freshman Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) and sophomore Austin Schoeck (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) beat Juan Rodriguez and Carlos Mizamos at number three 8-2.
 
Palmer beat Ramos 6-3; 6-0 at number one singles and senior Grant Wick (Windsor HS, Fort Collins, Colo.) won a hard-fought match over Alejandro Chantan 6-4; 1-6; 10-6 at number four. Sophomore Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.) beat Jose Luis Ayanda 6-4; 6-4 at number five. Woolf defeated Mizamos 6-0; 6-1 at number six.
 
AUGUSTANA 6, CAPITAL 3
 
Augustana moved to 6-3 on the season with a 6-3 win over Capital in Palmas Del Mar, Humacao, Puerto Rico.
 
In the doubles portion, the Vikings lost at number one when Palmer and Wall fell 8-4 to Luke Buchanan and Dale Bodier but picked up wins at two and three to go ahead 2-1 heading into the singles portion of the match. Arnold and Bayles beat Spencer Walter and Beau Streatey 8-6 at number two and Schoeck and Woolf defeated Jared Judson and Brian Carlo DiMichaelangelo 9-8 at number three.
 
Palmer beat Buchanan 6-3; 6-0 at number one and Wall took care of Walter 6-3; 7-5 at number two. Schoeck defeated DiMichaelangelo 3-6; 6-3; 10-4 at number five and freshman Jonathon Elsey (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) picked up a 6-2; 6-2 win over Judson at number six.
