Etheridge hits for 28 points but it is not enough as Vikings fall to Elmhurst on "Senior Night"

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Despite a 28 point performance from senior Molly Etheridge (Normal Community HS, Bloomington, Ill.), Augustana dropped a tough 75-71 decision to Elmhurst on Saturday, February 15 on Senior Night in the Carver Center. The Vikings let a six point lead slip away in the final three minutes as the Bluejays went on an 11-1 to close out the game.
 
Elmhurst led 36-30 at halftime after holding a margin that was 16 points (26-10) at its largest and that was with 7:12 remaining in the first stanza. Trailing by 16 points, the Vikings chipped away and closed the half on a 20-10 run.
 
In the second half Augustana took its first lead with 9:53 left on a jumper by junior Valerie VanRoeyen (Libertyville HS, Grayslake, Ill.). A three point basket by Etheridge with 4:16 remaining put the Vikings on top by seven (69-62). Elmhurst scored 13 of its last 18 points from the free throw line.
 
Etheridge was eight of 17 from the field but connected on four of five three point attempts and eight of 10 from the free throw line. She also grabbed six rebounds and added a pair of assists. Etheridge was joined in double figures by sophomore Marissa Pezzopane (Addison Trail HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) with 12 points. Etheridge and fellow seniors Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) and Jessica Baids (West Chicago HS, Carol Stream, Ill.)  tied for the rebounding lead with six.
 
Elmhurst got 17 points and 11 rebounds from Fiona McMahon and 10 points from Nikky Moan.
 
Augustana is now 6-18 overall and 2-11 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin while Elmhurst is 13-10 and 5-7. The Vikings will travel to North Park next Saturday, February 22 to close out the season with a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
