ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Coe shot 70 percent from the floor, including six of 11 three-point attempts, in the second half Wednesday, wiping put a 37-33 halftime deficit to defeat Augustana 82-67 at Carver Center. The Vikings fell to 0-2 on the year, while the Kohawks improved to 1-2.
 
Behind 15 points from junior post Marissa Pezzopane (Addison Trail HS, Wood Dale, Ill.), Augustana jumped out to a lead as large as eight points in the first half. A pair of Katie Villa (Craig HS, Janesville, Wis.) free throws with 1:08 left in the period put the hosts up 37-29. Coe's Ashley Stulken scored twice in the final 46 seconds to pull her team within four at the break. The Vikings held the Kohawks to just .406 field goal shooting and committed only three turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Junior Andrea McNally (Hinsdale South HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) added eight points and six rebounds.
 
Coe came out on fire in the second stanza. Mickey Hansche's three-pointer on the Kohawks' first possession cut the Augustana lead to 37-36 and a basket by Allie Wirth on their next gave the visitors the lead. The Vikings tied it twice more—at 38 on the first of two Meagan Murphy (Marian Central Catholic HS, Johnsburg, Ill.) free throw attempts and again at 40 on a bucket by sophomore Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.)—but another trey by Jenna Lehman gave Coe the lead for good at 43-40.
 
A steal and layup by sophomore Jen VanWatermeulen (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) got Augustana within one, but the Kohawks responded with a 10-0 run to push their advantage to 53-42 with 14:09 to play. Back-to-back three-pointers by senior Valerie VanRoeyen (Libertyville HS, Grayslake, Ill.) and Mayer got the Vikings to within 53-49, but another Coe run, this one 21-4, put the contest out of reach.
 
Pezzopane led the way for Augustana with a game-high 22 points to go along with six rebounds. McNally added 15 points, six boards and four assists without committing a turnover and Mayer finished with 11 points. VanWatermeulen was outstanding defensively, with five steals in just 19 minutes of action. The Vikings shot .393 for the game on 24 of 61 from the floor. They connected on eight of 16 three-point attempts, including three from Pezzopane and a pair from McNally, and were 11 of 17 (.647) from the foul line. Coe hit 21 of 30 shots from the field in the second half to finish 34-62 (.548) for the game. The Kohawks converted 11 of 24 (.458) trey attempts and won the battle of the boards 40-28. Augustana committed just nine turnovers to Coe's 15.
 
Coach Mark Beinborn's squad is back at home on Saturday, November 22. The Vikings will host Blackburn at Carver Center with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
