Volleyball rallies for five-set win at UW-Platteville

Sophomore Hannah Lindaman had 21 assists in Augustana's
five-set win at Wisconsin-Platteville Friday.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Trailing 2-1 after three sets, Augustana rallied to claim the final two and win at Wisconsin-Platteville Friday. Coach Kelly Bethke's Vikings improved to 14-4 heading into Saturday, October 4 matches against Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Wisconsin-River Falls. The Pioneers dropped to 6-13 on the season.
 
Down 24-23 in the opening set, Augustana got a Jordan Hampel (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) service ace, a Dory Dudley (Tremont HS, Tremont, Ill.) kill and a combined block by Emily Leazer (St. Viator HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) to win the final three points and take the set 26-24.
 
A 7-0 Platteville run in the second set took the score from 7-6 to 14-6 and the hosts went on to even the match at a set apiece with a 25-16 win. The Pioneers won seven straight points again in the third, going from down 8-3 to up 10-8 on their way to a 25-20 win.
 
It was the Vikings that put together a big run in set four. With the visitors trailing 12-8 and fighting for their lives, Hampel served nine straight Augustana points. Junior Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) and sophomore Kibir-Evans teamed up three times for blocks during the run and each had a kill as well. Hampel, a junior, had an ace and finished off the spree with her only kill of the match. When it was over, Bethke's squad led 17-12 and went on to even things up with a 25-22 win. A kill by sophomore Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) finished off the set.
 
The deciding fifth set was tied 3-3 when sophomore Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Ill.) stepped up to serve. Augustana won the next four points—getting kills from Morrissey and Murray—to take a 7-3 lead and went on win the set 15-12. Hampel set Murray for kills on the final two points of the match.
 
Dudley had a match-high 14 kills for Augustana, with Morrissey contributing 11 and Leazer 10. Hampel had match highs of 29 assists and three service aces. Lindaman added 21 assists. Junior Kylie Siebert's (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) 30 digs were also a match best. Leazer added 24 digs and Hampel and Murray a dozen each. Kibir-Evans and senior Hailee Brayton (St. Bede Academy, La Salle, Ill.) were each in on five blocks.
 
A contest between the Vikings and Carthage, scheduled for earlier in the day, was canceled.
