Final tune-up for CCIW tournament nets women's tennis 8-1 win over UW-Stevens Point

Senior Chelsea Lavin battled cold and wind in her final match on the Lower Campus Courts
as Augustana defeated UW-Stevens Point 8-1. Lavin, who plays softball in the spring,
teamed with fellow senior Miranda Pence to win at number three doubles. She also made
a rare appearance in singles and dropped a three-set match at number six for the 12-2 
Vikings.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – In a final tune-up before the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament, the Augustana women's tennis team defeated Wisconsin-Stevens Point 8-1 on a cold and windy Lower Campus Courts on Saturday, October 4. The win gave head coach Jon Miedema's team a glossy 12-2 record in the dual meet portion of the 2014-15 fall season. The Vikings will now play in the CCIW tournament on October 16-18 in Bloomington, Illinois.
 
It marked the final home appearance for senior Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and she made the most of it. Lavin, who has been Augustana's starting centerfielder in softball the last two years, does not play tennis in the spring. In her last time on the Lower Campus Courts in match competition, she teamed with fellow senior Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) at number three doubles and defeated Abbey Johnson and Erin Lemmer 8-4. Lavin and Pence were 4-2 this season.
 
Lavin, who does not normally play singles, took the court in that role on Saturday and she dropped a tough 6-2; 4-6; 4-10 decision to Lemmer at number six. She finished the year 1-1 in singles.
 
Sophomores Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) beat Katelyn Asfeld and Hayley Schlueter at number one by the score of 8-2. The Goggin twins are now 13-4 on the season in doubles. Lauren Goggin beat Asfeld 6-0; 6-2 at number one singles to move to 13-2 while Dana Goggin defeated Schlueter 6-2; 6-0 at number two and is also 13-2 this season.
 
Freshman Mollie Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.) and sophomore Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) took care of Kristen Finstad and Molly Hendries 8-4 at number two doubles. Magee, who now has a team leading 16 victories in singles against just four defeats, beat Hendries 6-2; 6-4 at number three.
 
Pence beat Finstad 6-0; 6-0 at number four and is 12-4 on the year while Even went to 3-0 with a 6-3; 6-3 win over Hannah Dexheimer at number five.
 
Augustana was also supposed to play the University of St. Francis in a match after the UW-Stevens Point contest but that was cancelled.
