AUGUSTANA 3, AURORA 0 (25-18; 25-19; 25-16) Sophomore
Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) led the Vikings with nine kills and senior
Emily Leazer (St. Viator HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and junior
Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) added eight each as Augustana scored an impressive straight-set win over an Aurora club that entered the match 20-9.
In the first set, the Vikings won seven straight points—six with Leazer serving—to take the score from 10-9 to 17-9 and went on to a 25-18 win. A Morrissey kill closed things out.
After falling behind 3-0 in the second, Augustana eventually took control with junior
Jordan Hampel (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) serving. The Vikings won six consecutive points to go from a 14-all tie to a 20-14 lead. Leazer's kill finished off a 25-19 win.
Bethke's crew won the final five points to take set three 25-16. Match point came on a kill by sophomore
Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) off a
Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) assist.
Hampel and Lindaman split a total of 34 assists evenly. Junior
Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) had match highs of 15 digs and four service aces, while Leazer contributed 10 digs. Kibir-Evans was in on six blocks.
EDGEWOOD 3, AUGUSTANA 1 (25-23; 19-25; 25-17; 25-20) In its second match of the day, Augustana fell to the host Eagles (17-11) in four sets.
The Vikings rallied from a 21-17 deficit in the first set to tie it at 21-all and 23-all. However, Edgewood won the final two points on an Augustana service error and attack error.
The second set went in the Vikings favor by a score of 25-19. They won four straight points to go from a 9-9 tie to a 13-9 lead and maintained that advantage through the rest of the set. An Eagle attack error accounted for set point.
Edgewood jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 17-5 in winning the final two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-20, respectively.
Senior
Dory Dudley (Tremont HS, Tremont, Ill.) had a team-high 13 kills with just one attack error for Augustana. Murray added a dozen kills. Hampel had a match-high 25 assists, with Lindaman setting 13. Leazer and Siebert again led the way in digs, with 15 and 14 respectively. Murray was in on four blocks as well, while Leazer, Kibir-Evans and freshman Maissie Musick
(Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) were in on three apiece.
