30th ranked Vikings go 2-2 at Chuck Porter Duals

GALESBURG, Ill. – The Augustana wrestling team, which made its debut in the NCAA Division III national rankings this week, put together a 2-2 record at the Chuck Porter Duals on Saturday, January 4 in Galesburg, Illinois. The Vikings, currently ranked 30th according to the National Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Association, won their first two matches of the day before falling in their last two.
 
In the first round Augustana took care of Calumet College of St. Joseph 45-7 and then walloped Hannibal-LaGrange 51-0. In the third round NCAA Division II Upper Iowa handed head coach Eric Juergens' bunch a 33-6 defeat. The Vikings then wrestled 12th ranked Luther and fell by a margin of 25-8.
 
Augustana is currently 9-3 in dual meets with a crucial College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin match at North Central coming up on Tuesday, January 7.
 
Junior Kevin Sundberg (Paw Paw HS, Paw Paw, Mich.) was the lone Viking to win all four of his matches on Saturday as he pushed his overall record to 20-6 on the season.
 
AUGUSTANA 45, CALUMET COLLEGE OF ST. JOSEPH 7
 
The Vikings had six forfeit victories that contributed 36 points en route to a 45-7 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph. Freshman Sean McMahon (Andrew HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) pulled out a hard-fought 2-1 win over Anthony Hawkins at 133 and junior John Schraidt (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) pinned Scott Pitrowski in just 1:03 of the 285 pound match.
 
Sophomore Jimmy Panozzo (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) at 125, sophomore Isaiah Schaub (St. Francis HS, Traverse City, Mich.) at 141, junior Hector Ruiz (East Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) at 149, Sundberg at 157, junior Connor Cummings (Downers Grove North HS, Woodridge, Ill.) and senior Jordan Richardson (Grandville HS, Wyoming, Mich.) at 174 all picked up forfeits.

AUGUSTANA 51, HANNIBAL-LAGRANGE 0
 
Winning all 10 weight classes, Augustana pitched a shutout at Hannibal-LaGrange, winning 51-0 in the second round of the Chuck Porter Duals. The Vikings won three matches by forfeit and picked up bonus points in five other weight classes.
 
Panozzo got things started with a 15-6 win over Brady Sloup at 125 pounds and McMahon followed with a 16-4 win against Caleb McElfresh at 133. Schaub then won by forfeit at 141 and Ruiz won the lone close contest of the dual meet when he beat Tyler Sonnabend 4-3 at 149 pounds.
 
Sundberg won by forfeit at 157 and Cummings beat Jeremiah Reed 23-9 at 165. Richardson won by technical fall at 1:30 (16-0) of his 174 pound bout against Grant Godfrey. Sophomore Dan Murray (Lane Tech HS, Chicago, Ill.) picked up a forfeit at 184 pounds and senior Hunter Feraco (Gull Lake HS, Battle Creek, Mich.) pinned Connor Braughton at 1:30 in the 197 pound class. Schraidt closed things out by pinning mike Wright at 1:48 in the 285 pound match.

UPPER IOWA 33, AUGUSTANA 6
 
The NCAA Division II Peacocks had too much for the Vikings and won 33-6.
 
After Panozzo got Augustana off to a good start with a 6-4 win over Mitch Funk at 125, the Vikings then lost two close ones. McMahon fell 5-3 to Tanner Schmidt at 133 and Schaub dropped a 3-1 decision to Duane Richardson at 141 pounds.
 
Upper Iowa's Edwin Cooper handled Ruiz 12-1 at 149 but Sundberg came up with a 6-1 win over Trevor duke at 157 and with five weight classes left Augustana only trailed 9-6. In a tight bout at 165 Cummings lost a tough 3-2 decision to Dalton Westerlund and Richardson fell 7-2 to Colbey Vance at 174. The Vikings then suffered two pins and a technical fall in the final three weight classes.

LUTHER 25, AUGUSTANA 8
 
In a match between the two team which finished second in their respective pools, the 12th ranked Norse defeated Juergens' 30th ranked Vikings 25-8.
 
Things certainly didn't start well for Augustana as Panozzo lost 10-3 to Garrett Wangsness at 125 and McMahon fell 13-0 to Evan Obert at 133. Schaub got the Vikings on the scoreboard with a 9-3 victory over Dakota Gray at 141 but Luther's Cody Orr beat Kadmiel Smith (Wilton HS, Wilton, Iowa) 17-3 at 149.
 
Sundberg picked up his fourth win of the day when he beat Blake Letney 11-5 at 165 to move to 20-6 on the year.
 
Four of the next five weight classes were decided by a combined margin of just nine points and Luther won three of the narrow decisions to secure the team victory. Cummings beat Javier Reyes 5-2 at 165 but Richardson lost 6-3 to Jarid Groth at 174. After Murray lost by technical fall at 184 to Jayden DeVilbiss, Feraco dropped a 3-1 decision to Nick Pearch at 197 and senior Abe Duran (East Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) fell 3-2 to Conner Herman at 285.
