ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Reversing two years of futility against Grinnell, the Augustana women's tennis team defeated the Pioneers 8-1 in an impressive display on Saturday, September 7 at the Lower Campus Courts. Third year head coach
Jon Miedema's club pushed its record to 5-0 on the season while Grinnell fell to 1-1.
Two years ago Grinnell posted a 6-1 win over Augustana as two individual matches were not finished due to weather and last year the Pioneers claimed an 8-1 victory. This time around the tables were turned completely.
Senior
Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.), the player who earned those lone points against Grinnell in the past two seasons, led the way. She defeated Sadhana Athreya at number one singles 6-3; 6-0 to move to 7-1 on the season and then teamed with
Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) at number one doubles for an 8-5 win over Athreya and Shirlene Luk. MacDonald and Sawyer are now 3-1.
MacDonald also picked up a singles victory as she beat Hanna Feldmen 7-5; 6-1 at number three to up her record to 4-0.
Freshman
Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) rolled past Virginia Purcell at number two singles 6-2; 6-0 and is now 5-0. Goggin and fellow freshman
Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) beat Shanaz Daneshdoost and Emma Macdonald 9-7 at number two doubles.
Senior
Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) defeated Shanaz Daneshdoost 6-1; 7-6 at number four and is now 6-2. Senior
Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) worked her way past Emma Macdonald 6-4; 6-3 to go to 3-2 at number five. Andonova defeated Julia Rumley 6-2; 6-2 at number six and is 2-0 on the young season.
The lone loss for the Vikings came at number three doubles where juniors
Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and
Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) fell 8-6 to Virginia Purcell and Hanna Feldman.
Augustana, which beat Illinois Wesleyan 9-0 earlier in the day to go 4-0 in the CCIW, will not play again until Saturday, September 14 at Wheaton.
