ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana split a pair of matches Wednesday at Carver Center, defeating Knox in straight sets before falling to Coe in five. Coach Jamie Eickman's Vikings, now 4-2 on the year, are next in action on September 10, when they travel to Dubuque to face the Spartans.
Augustana 3, Knox 0 (25-8; 25-13; 25-12)
The Augustana volleyball team moved to 4-1 on the year with a straight-set victory over Knox at Carver Center Wednesday afternoon. The Vikings took the opening set 25-8 and well as the next two, 25-13 and 25-12, respectively. Knox fell to 1-2 on the season.
Coming off a tournament MVP performance in last weekend's Viking Classic, junior Dory Dudley (Tremont HS, Tremont, Ill.) continued to play well. She finished with a team-high eight kills and just one attack error in 15 attempts, good for a hitting percentage of .467. Augustana had just four attack errors as a team and compiled a hitting percentage of .353.
Sophomore setter Jordan Hampel (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) led the Vikings with 12 assists and three service aces. Junior Julee Morrison (Chaparral HS, Scottsdale, Ariz.) and sophomore Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) each came through with eight digs. Junior Stephanie Petkovsek (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) added 10 assists and a pair of service aces.
Coe 3, Augustana 2 (25-23; 22-25; 22-25; 25-15; 18-16)
Augustana dropped a tightly contested match in the nightcap of Wednesday's triangular. After falling 25-23 in the first set, the Vikings rebounded with consecutive 25-22 wins. Coe got a decisive 25-15 win in the fourth set and prevailed in a nip-and-tuck fifth, 18-16. Augustana rallied from a 14-11 deficit in the deciding set to reach match point twice, but couldn't finish off the Kohawks.
Sophomore Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) and Dudley led the Vikings with 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Hampel, with 25, and freshman Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa), with 19, led in assists. Siebert had a team-high 27 digs with Murray (19), Lindaman (16), Hampel (15) and freshman Laura Hedden (Illinois Valley Central HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) (12) also reaching double figures.
Rachel Bosworth led the Kohawks with 13 kills. Mackenzie Harbaugh led with 35 assists and Alissa Wittenburg and Olivia Glaudel each came up with 20 digs.
