ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – As the final point dropped in the number two doubles match on Wednesday, September 25 at Augustana's Lower Campus Courts, senior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) reacted pretty much the same way she has for her entire career with the Vikings. She shook hands with her partner Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), went to the net and greeted her Cornell College opponents and then went and changed the numbers on the score card fixed to the net. She then paused to give encouragement to her teammates Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.), who were locked in a tight battle at number one doubles.

It appeared to be just another victory for the talented Sawyer but it wasn't. When Sawyer and MacDonald dusted off Dana Dowell and Veronika Reidel 8-0 it pushed Sawyer into uncharted territory. She became Augustana's career record holder for combined (singles and doubles) victories in women's tennis. Heading into the match, Sawyer was tied with Sarah Ainsworth for the school record with 158 (158-36 from 1993-98). After the victory, Sawyer now stands with an overall record of 159-53 and by the end of the night she would add a singles win to move to 160-53. She is 64-33 in doubles and 96-20 in singles during her stellar career.

While Sawyer's record-setting victory was a focal point of the afternoon, not to be lost is the fact that Augustana was in complete control during an 8-1 win over the Rams in non-conference action. The Vikings are now 9-0 on the season heading into a pair of College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matches this weekend at North Central and Elmhurst. Augustana will play North Central on Saturday, September 28 at 1:00 p.m. in Naperville, Illinois and then face Elmhurst at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 29 in Elmhurst, Illinois. Victories over the Cardinals and the Bluejays will give the Vikings the regular season title in the CCIW.

While Sawyer and MacDonald were winning at second doubles and moving to 8-2 on the year, juniors Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) and Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) beat Anne Seng and Heather Schrauth 8-0 at number three to go to 7-3. The Goggin twins fell to Ariana Hudson and Shashanna Moll 8-5 at number one doubles to fall to 8-3 this season.

Ahead 2-1 heading into the singles portion of the competition, Augustana made quick work of the Rams, winning each of the six matches in straight sets and only allowing Cornell to win two games in five of the 12 games. The other seven games all went to the Vikings by scores of either 6-0 or 6-1.

Sawyer defeated Hudson 6-2; 6-2 and she is now 14-2 on the year. Lauren Goggin beat Moll 6-2; 6-2 at number two to run her record to 9-3 and Dana Goggin defeated Seng 6-0; 6-2 and is now 5-3. MacDonald, who was the first singles player off the court, made short work of Dowell at number four, winning 6-1; 6-0 to move to 8-2.

Senior Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) beat Schrauth 6-0; 6-1 to up her mark to 9-2 and senior Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) is now 6-2 after defeating Reidel 6-1; 6-1.
