PELLA, Iowa – Augustana was unable to hold onto a 2-0 lead and dropped a 3-2 non-conference decision to Central of Iowa on Friday, September 20 in Pella, Iowa. The Vikings and the Dutch played an even most of the night before the hosts prevailed in the fifth and deciding game.
Fourth-year head coach Jamie Eickman's young team (four freshmen and three sophomores saw considerable floor time in this match) won the first set 33-31 and rolled to a 25-12 win in game two. The Dutch took a gut-wrenching third set 35-33 after Augustana led 21-16. The Vikings had six match points in set three but were unable to close out the game and the match.
The fourth set was tied 10-10 before Central went on an 8-3 run to build an 18-13 lead en route to a 25-19 win. The fifth and deciding set was won by the Dutch 15-11 as the Vikings never led and at one time were down 11-4 before going on a 7-2 run to close the margin to 13-11.
Sophomore
Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) led the way offensively for Augustana with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .225 with seven kills in 40 attempts. She had three service aces, eight digs and two assisted blocks. Junior
Dory Dudley (Tremont HS, Tremont, Ill.) posted 13 kills with three digs and two assisted blocks.
Junior
Samantha Kammerman (Sherrard HS, Milan, Ill.) added nine kills with four digs, two assisted blocks and one service ace. Freshman
Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) put down eight kills with six digs and an assisted block. Junior
Hailee Brayton (Peru St. Bede Academy, LaSalle, Ill.) had seven kills with three digs, three assisted blocks and one solo block.
Sophomore
Jordan Hampel (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) led the team with 26 assists from her setter's position and she had 12 digs and a kill. Freshman
Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) contributed 23 assists with three service aces and 17 digs.
Sophomore
Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) had 25 digs with 10 assists and a service ace.
Central had three players with double digits in kills. Jessica Laflin and Sara Snead each had 14 while Hannah Welter was credited with 12. Setter Claire Stewart had 52 assists and 15 digs.
Augustana is now 8-4 on the season and three of those four losses have gone five sets. The Vikings will host Monmouth in a non-conference match on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Carver Center.
