Labor Day wins over Loras and Millikin push women's tennis to 3-0

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Working on Labor Day certainly proved to be fruitful for the Augustana women's tennis team as the Vikings moved their record to 3-0 on the season with a pair of shutout victories on Monday, September 2 at the Lower Campus Courts. Third year head coach Jon Miedema's team opened the day with a 9-0 whitewash of Loras and came back later in the day to defeat Millikin 9-0 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action.

Augustana is now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW and will be in action again on Saturday, September 7 with a CCIW battle against Illinois Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m. and a non-conference match with Grinnell at 3:00 p.m. Both of those matches will also be at home.

AUGUSTANA 9, LORAS 0

After defeating Carthage 6-3 on Friday, August 30 to open the season, the Vikings stayed hot with a 9-0 non-conference victory against Loras on Labor Day morning.

A clean sweep of the doubles set the tone for this match.

Sophomore Lauren Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) and sophomore Madeline Voss (Lincoln-Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) were the first winners off the court with an 8-3 win at number three doubles over Rebecca Weglarz and Est Mungai. Juniors Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) and Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) beat Caroline Rainey and Carrie Brabill at number two 8-1. The number one team of freshman Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) beat the Loras sister duo of Elizabeth and Jessica Dickhut 8-4.

Senior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) defeated Elizabeth Dickhut 6-1; 6-0 at number one singles while freshman Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) took care of Jessica Dickhut 6-0; 6-4 at number two.

Freshman Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) beat Crabill 6-0; 6-0 at number three and senior Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) defeated Rainey 6-1; 6-2 at number four. At number five singles Andonova got the call and she responded with a 6-1; 6-1 win over Weglarz. Freshman Alina Zabolotico (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) beat Mungai 6-4; 6-2.

AUGUSTANA 9, MILLIKIN 0

Augustana went to 2-0 in the CCIW and 3-0 overall with a win over the Big Blue by a score of 9-0.

The Goggin twins played number one doubles and defeated Paige Bequette and Meagan Booth 8-1 while Sawyer and MacDonald were at number two doubles and came through with an 8-0 victory over Amber and Ryan Morgan. Lavin and Pence dropped down to third doubles and took care of Erica Cornelius and Paige Ehrat 8-2.

Sawyer beat Bequette 6-2; 6-2 at number one singles. Lauren Goggin defeated Booth 6-1; 6-0 at number two and Dana Goggin tossed a 6-0; 6-0 shutout at Amber Morgan at number three. MacDonald won 6-0; 6-0 over Ehrat at number four and Emily Kaczmarek beat Erica Cornelius 6-0; 6-1 at number five. Senior Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) won 6-2; 6-0 over Ryan Morgan at number six.
