Women's tennis splits squad and picks up wins over Knox at home and St. Ambrose on the road

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Working with a split squad, Augustana picked up a pair of victories in women's tennis on Tuesday, September 17 to move to 8-0 on the season. The Vikings beat Knox 9-0 at home while at the same time; a second Augustana squad was across the Mississippi River defeating St. Ambrose 6-3.

The Vikings had little trouble dispatching the Prairie Fire by the score of 9-0. Senior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) led the way, winning at number one singles and sharing a victory at number one doubles with sophomore Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.). Sawyer beat Charlotte Garvin 6-1; 6-2 in singles and teamed with MacDonald to defeat Garvin and Emiley Brand 8-2 in doubles. MacDonald also won at number two singles, beating Dana Pierce 6-2; 6-3.
 
Senior Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) beat Brand 6-0; 6-1 at number three singles and freshman Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) took care of Claire Neri at number four singles 6-1; 6-0. Freshman Alina Zabolotico (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) defeated Eden McKissick-Hawley 6-1; 6-0 at number five with sophomore Madeline Voss (Lincoln-Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) winning 6-3; 6-0 against Margaret St. Clair at number six.
 
Andonova and freshman Amy Even (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) beat Pierce and McKissick-Hawley 8-4 at number two. Voss and Kaczmarek teamed up at number three doubles to beat Neri and Dohm 8-1.
 
AUGUSTANA 6, ST. AMBROSE 3
 
While one group of Vikings was dusting off Knox 9-0, the other part of head coach Jon Miedema's team was locked into a tussle with cross-river rival St. Ambrose that eventually ended with Augustana on top 6-3.
 
The Vikings took a 2-1 lead after doubles play with the freshman duo of Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) rolling past Olivia Lofgren and Heather Matejka 8-0 at number one. Juniors Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) and Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) beat Allie DeRoo and Emily Daniels 8-1 at number two.
 
St. Ambrose took the number three doubles match when Samantha Rochkus and Karissa Kalous beat sophomore Lauren Kaczmarek (Downers Grove South HS, Lombard, Ill.) and senior Caitee Margenthaler (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) 8-6.
 
Dana Goggin defeated Lofgren 6-0; 6-1 at number two singles and senior Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) beat DeRoo 6-0; 6-0 at number three. Pence picked up a 6-1; 6-2 victory over Daniels at number four and Lauren Kaczmarek beat Kalous 2-6; 6-1; 13-11 at number six.
 
Lauren Goggin fell to Matejka 4-6; 6-0; 8-10 at number one and junior Kelsey Kammerzelt (The Prairie School, Union Grove, Wis.) dropped a 3-6; 1-6 decision to Amanda Aronson at number five.
