Dubuque hands Vikings tough five-set defeat

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Dubuque survived falling behind two sets to none and then two match points in the final set Tuesday, handing Augustana a tough 3-2 setback at the Stolts SportsCenter. The Vikings dropped to 4-3 in the season, while the host Spartans improved to 4-4.
 
Augustana took the opening two sets by identical 26-24 scores before dropping the third 25-18. Dubuque evened things up with a 25-23 fourth-set win. In the fifth, the Vikings served for match point at 14-13 and 15-14, but the Spartans won four of the last five points for an 18-16 win to claim the match.
 
Junior Dory Dudley (Tremont HS, Tremont, Ill.) had a team-high 19 kills for Augustana, while sophomore Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) added 13 and junior Hailee Brayton (St. Bede Academy, La Salle, Ill.) 11. Sophomore Jordan Hampel (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) led the Vikings with 27 assists, with freshman Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) contributing 19.
 
Topped by sophomore Kylie Siebert's (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) 29, four Vikings reached double figures in digs. Hampel and freshman Amy Kalkhoff (Amana Clear Creek HS, North Liberty, Iowa) each had a dozen and Murray 10. Kalkhoff had a team-high three aces and Hampel, Siebert and junior Julee Morrison (Chaparral HS, Scottsdale, Ariz.) two each.
 
Coach Jamie Eickman's club travels to Oberlin, Ohio this weekend, where they will face the host Yeowomen on Friday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m. and LaRoche on Saturday, September 14 at 11:00 a.m.
