ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – After dropping the opening set of its match with Loras 25-17 Saturday afternoon, Coach Jamie Eickman's Augustana volleyball team bounced back to win three straight and defeat the Duhawks 3-1 at Carver Center. The hosts finished the season-opening Viking Classic with a 3-1 record. Loras finished the tournament 2-2.
Augustana took the second set 25-21, but trailed 21-19 in the third before junior Samantha Kammerman (Sherrard HS, Milan, Ill.) served six consecutive points to seal the win. Kammerman had four aces in the run, including three straight to end the set.
The Vikings went on to claim the fourth set 25-20. A Kammerman block closed out the match.
Sophomore Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) led Augustana with 11 kills and also had 14 digs in the match. Tournament MVP Dory Dudley (Tremont HS, Tremont, Ill.) recorded 10 kills while committing just a single attack error and freshman Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) had seven kills without an attack error.
Sophomore Jordan Hampel (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) and freshman Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Ill.) paced the Vikings with 18 and 16 assists, respectively. Sophomore Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) had seven assists and a team-high 26 digs.
In addition to Dudley's MVP honors, Siebert was also named to the all-tournament team.
St. Ambrose finished 4-0 to claim the Viking Classic title. Augustana was second at 3-1 and Westminster and Loras tied for third in the six-team field at 2-2.
Eickman's squad is back in action at Carver Center on Wednesday, September 4, hosting Knox at 4:00 p.m. and Coe at 8:00 p.m.
