KENOSHA, Wis. – A tough season-opening match on the road with College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin foe Carthage proved to be a great start for third-year head coach Jon Miedema and his Augustana women's tennis team. The Vikings defeated the Lady Reds 6-3 on the road in a match played at the Eastside Tennis & Fitness Club in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
After falling behind 2-1 after doubles, Augustana roared back and won five of six in singles to claim the victory. The Vikings have now won four of the last five matches against Carthage after dropping 12 straight between 1998 and 2009.
The freshman twin combination of Lauren and Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) were impressive in their first collegiate competition. They picked up Augustana's lone doubles victory by beating Abbi Howell and Eliza Barter 8-3 at number two and each won in singles as well. Lauren beat Haleigh McPeek 6-3; 3-6; 6-0 at number two and Dana defeated Howell 6-1; 6-1 at number three.
Senior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) continued her winning ways be beating Bari Reynolds at number one 6-2; 6-2. Sawyer was 26-4 a year ago and is the defending CCIW champion at number one singles. She now has 83 singles wins and 139 overall victories (singles and doubles combined) in her illustrious career.
Sophomore Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) beat Barter 6-1; 6-4 at number four and senior Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) defeated Kristen Kalinka 4-6; 6-3; 10-5.
Augustana will participate in the Warhawk Invitational on Saturday, August 31 in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
