ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana outshot Concordia 48 percent to 40 and outrebounded the visiting Falcons 38-37 Saturday, but couldn't overcome 26 turnovers and fell 77-65 in the season opener for both teams at Carver Center. The Vikings were led by guard Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.), who came off the bench for 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals in her first collegiate game.

Concordia built an 18-8 lead at the 10:54 mark of the first half, hitting eight of their first 14 field goal attempts including three-pointers from Jessica House and Camille Parsons.

The Falcons still led 29-21 after a Madelyn Landgraf trey with 4:15 left in the first half. However, Augustana senior Molly Etheridge (Normal Community HS, Bloomington, Ill.) responded with seven straight points in less than a minute to get the hosts to within 31-28. Seconds later, she had a chance to tie the game with an open three-point look from the left wing, but passed up the shot and picked up a charge when she drove the lane. That sparked a 9-0 Concordia run to end the half as the Falcons went to the locker room leading 40-28.

The visitors maintained a double-digit lead in the second half until a Mayer bucket at the 4:14 mark got Augustana to within 63-54. On four occasions he Vikings whittled the deficit to eight, but could get no closer as Concordia converted 18 of 26 free throws in the second half to protect the lead.

Sophomore post player Marissa Pezzopane (Addison Trail HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) came off the bench to join Mayer in double figures for Augustana. Pezzopane scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Mayer was four of five from the floor, including one of two from beyond the arc. Etheridge finished with nine points, while senior Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) and sophomore Andrea McNally (Hinsdale South HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) added eight each.

Katie Luethe led four Falcons in double figures with a game-high 19 points.

Coach Mark Beinborn's squad is on the road on Friday, November 22, taking on Blackburn in Carlinville, Illinois.
