Vikings fall in three sets to Millikin

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Millikin remained undefeated in CCIW volleyball play with a three-set win over Augustana Tuesday night at Carver Center. The Vikings fell 25-17 in the opening set, 25-20 in the second and 25-13 in the third. The Big Blue improved to 20-8 overall and 5-0 in the league. Augustana is now 14-10 on the year and 2-2 in the conference.
 
The Vikings bounced back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the first set 7-7, but Millikin won the next four points and pulled away for the 25-17 win.
 
Augustana had its best opportunity in the second set. After falling behind 6-1, the Vikings rallied to eventually take the lead at 13-12. They were able to build it to 16-12 before the Big Blue took nine straight points and a 21-16 lead. A Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) kill got the hosts as close as 23-20, but Millikin was able to claim the final two points to finish off the set.
 
The Big Blue led wire-to-wire in a 25-13 third-set victory.
 
Sophomore libero Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) recorded a match-high 28 digs for the Vikings. Junior Emily Leazer (St. Viator HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) led the way offensively, with seven kills, followed by juniors Samantha Kammerman (Sherrard HS, Milan, Ill.) and Dory Dudley (Tremont HS, Tremont, Ill.), with four each. Sophomore Jordan Hampel (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) had a team-high 10 assists. Freshman Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) had eight assist and a pair of aces. Junior Hailee Brayton (St. Bede Academy, La Salle, Ill.) led the Vikings with three blocks.
 
Coach Steve Hennings' Vikings host the third annual Pumpkin Bash this weekend. Augustana kicks off tournament play with games against North Park and Central on Friday, October 25 at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively. Friday's matches will be played at Carver Center, with Saturday's moving to Pepsico Recreation Center.
