Pat Cavanagh was the last wrestler to compete in the NCAA College Division Championships, missing All-American status by one match, which he lost in overtime his junior year. He also was the first NCAA Division III wrestling All-American with his runner-up finish competing in the first-ever NCAA Division III National Championships.
 
Cavanagh's record of 48-10-3 in the 177 weight class was achieved against a number of NCAA Division I and Division II competition. Significant wins during his time at Augustana include an 11-4 win over Greg Goebel, who was a two-time CCIW champion and two-time most outstanding wrestler in the conference at Elmhurst. Cavanagh also picked up a win over three-time NCAA DIII All-American Eric Guyll of Millersville University, who also was a 190-pound DIII national champion. Cavanagh defeated Guyll by a score of 4-3.
 
The Alleman High School graduate passed away on January 4, 2022 at the age of 72. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had a 20-year career with the East Moline Fire Department.
