Augustana College Athletics

Dr. E. F. Bergren was a multiple sport athlete who distinguished himself in football, baseball and tennis. In 1904 he was the starting fullback and captain of Augustana’s grid squad and he was later named to the all-time All-Augustana football team by the Augustana Observer and the Viking football staff in 1930.

Bergren entered the ministry following his graduation in 1907 and that led to a 50 year service career as a Lutheran pastor. Included among the many congregations which he served was the First Lutheran Church of Des Moines, Iowa, where he was later named Pastor Emeritus. Bergren also served on the Augustana College Board of Directors. He retired in 1959 and passed away in 1975.
