Vikings win first CCIW championship since 1985; make first NCAA Tournament appearance ever; finish 19-11 overall and 6-1 in the league; crown conference champions at four flights; Totten, DeRezende and Alex named to All-CCIW team; Pohl named CCIW Championship MVP; Totten named Academic All-America, NCAA Postgraduate Scholar and CCIW Man of the Year
 
Coach Jon Miedema's 2017-18 Augustana men won the program's first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship since 1985 and made their first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. The Vikings finished 19-11 overall and 6-1 in the league and crowned conference champions at four of nine flights. Senior Samuel Totten (University HS, Normal, Ill.) was named to the All-CCIW first team for the third straight year, while freshmen Caio DeRezende (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) earned second team recognition. Totten capped his career by becoming the school's 173rd Academic All-America selection, an NCAA Postgraduate Scholar and the CCIW Man of the Year.
 
Augustana earned the top seed at the CCIW Championship in Naperville, Illinois on May 3-5 by virtue of a 6-1 head-to-head record in the conference. That included a win over Wheaton, who also finished 6-1. The Vikings opened with eighth seed Elmhurst and dispatched the Bluejays 5-0. In the semifinals, the Vikings avenged their only league loss with a 5-2 win over Carthage. In the finals, Miedema's bunch downed Wheaton 5-1 for Augustans's first CCIW Championship in 33 years. Senior Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) was named MVP of the tournament.
 
The conference title also earned the Vikings a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time. Playing at the University of Chicago, they defeated John Carroll 5-2 in the first round before falling 5-1 to the hosts to end their season. Augustana's win against the Maroons came at first doubles, where Totten and Pohl logged their school-record 69th victory together against just 36 losses.
 
Totten finished the year 18-10 in singles and led the team in doubles wins with a 21-13 mark.
 
DeRezende, who logged 11 matches at first singles, was Miedema's primary number two and led Augustana in singles wins with a 19-11 record. He was 17-8 in doubles competition.
 
Alex posted a 17-10 singles mark, playing primarily at number three. He won the CCIW championship at third singles with a 6-0 mark and teamed with freshman Tom Friberg (Lund, Sweden) to claim the title at second doubles, also at 6-0 in the league. Alex finished with an overall doubles record of 20-14.
 
With a 6-1 record in conference play, Pohl was crowned CCIW champion at fourth singles. He finished the season 14-8 in singles and 15-9 in doubles.
 
Junior Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) logged at least one match at all six singles flights and finished the year 15-9. He posted an 18-10 doubles record and will need just eight total wins as a senior to become the 18th member of Augustana's 100-win club.
 
Freshman Rodrigo Medeiros (Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) won the CCIW championship at number six singles with a 5-1 record. He finished the year with overall marks of 13-6 in singles play and 8-4 in doubles.
 
The only two seniors on the Viking roster finish with their names peppered all over the school's career lists. Totten posted a singles mark of 61-40, placing him sixth on the career list for wins. He also ranks third in doubles victories with a career mark of 77-41. With a 138-81 combined record, he ranks third all-time at Augustana in total wins. Pohl ended up second all-time in doubles wins with a record of 79-39 and added a 56-56 singles ledger to close his career fifth in total victories at 135.
