ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A shorthanded Augustana wrestling team battled against Wisconsin-Platteville on Friday, January 19 in the Carver Center before falling 28-13. The Vikings gave up a forfeit at 125 pounds and had backups at three spots later in the lineup.
 
Still, Augustana recorded three straight wins after a rocky start to forge a 9-9 tie after five weight classes before the Pioneers flexed their muscle late in the match.
 
After giving up the forfeit at 125 to fall behind 6-0, senior Brendan Gould (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) dropped a tough 6-5 decision at 133 to Scott Arenson. Gould got behind 6-0 in the early going after giving up a takedown and four back points but he countered with four back points of his own in the second period and an escape in the third. That closed the gap to 6-5 but he could not get any more and fell to 16-11 on the year.
 
The Vikings then ripped off three straight victories. Junior Dale Charlier (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) scored a takedown late in the third period against Chase Katzenmeyer to pick up a 4-2 win at 141 pounds. Charlier is now 17-8 on the year and is tied the team lead in victories. Senior Matt Sears (Marist HS, New Lenox, Ill.) beat Trevor Harsh 4-3 at 149 and freshman Neil O'Shaughnessy (Niles West HS, Niles, Ill.) took down Isaac Roffers 13-8 at 157.
 
After tying the match at 9-9, Augustana suffered four straight defeats with two of them being pins and a third resulting in a superior decision.
 
Sophomore Adarios Jones (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) beat Lucius Rinehart 21-8 at 285 pounds to continue his perfect season at 15-0.
 
Augustana fell to 1-10 on the year while UW-Platteville moved to 3-2. The Vikings will be in action again on January 26-27 at the Pete Willson Invitational in Wheaton, Illinois.
